Lombok gets pretty crowded these days, I won’t lie. But if you take a random turn off the main road and drive up into the forest, you end up at Otak Kokok waterfall. It’s one of those rare spots where nature still runs the show. Just cold mountain streams, thick green leaves everywhere, and air that actually feels clean. No tour buses idling nearby, no loud speakers, nothing like that.
I’m Wayan. I’ve been running Lombok Adventure Trip for over 15 years now, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that travelers rarely remember the famous, crowded photo spots. They remember places like this. Sitting on a wet rock, listening to the water hit the riverbed, with birds making noise in the trees overhead. Simple stuff, really.
Why Otak Kokok Belongs on Your Radar
If you hate queueing up just to take a picture, put this place on your list. Even in peak season, Otak Kokok waterfall stays pretty quiet.
The walk in sets the mood straight away. You’re walking under huge trees, smelling damp earth, and feeling the temperature drop almost immediately. The waterfall itself shifts throughout the year, too. After a night of heavy rain, it’s loud and heavy. During dry spells, it turns into a soft, clear trickle. That’s why local photographers keep coming back—it’s never quite the same waterfall twice.

A Practical Otak Kokok Waterfall Guide
Guiding international travelers through North Lombok all these years taught us a few basic rules for this trail. First off, leave the slick flip-flops at your hotel. The path gets greasy real quick after a light shower, so wear sneakers or sandals with actual grip. Lightweight clothes are fine for the humidity, but toss a light rain jacket in your daypack anyway—mountain weather is unpredictable.
Don’t forget a refillable water bottle, bug spray, and a dry pouch for your phone or camera. If you want those nice beams of light cutting through the forest canopy, try to get here early in the morning. And about swimming: currents change fast depending on recent rain up on the mountain. Take a good look at the water pool before jumping in, or just ask your guide if it’s safe that day.
How to Visit Otak Kokok Waterfall Without the Stress
Trying to figure out local minivans, road conditions, and directions on your own usually eats up half your day. Honestly, the easiest way out is grabbing a private ride with a local driver who knows which roads are currently clear and where the potholes are.
Having your own car means you run the schedule. If you want to hang out by the stream an extra hour doing nothing, you can. Nobody is honking at you to get back into a group shuttle.
Most people make a full day out of it anyway. If you love rainforest trails, you can easily swing by Sendang Gile waterfall on the same trip. Or, if you’re heading down toward the middle of the island, Aik Berik waterfall gives you another awesome, super green jungle stop.

Combine Your Waterfall Run with Sembalun
Once you’re done at the waterfall, you can drive straight up into the highlands of Sembalun. The landscape flips completely out there—you suddenly get massive valley views, cooler winds, and traditional Sasak farming villages tucked between the hills.
Arranging a private Sembalun tour is probably the easiest way to pack both rainforests and mountain views into one day. My favorite part of the job is watching people get out at the Sembalun viewpoint. Everyone stops talking for a second, pulls out their phones, turns around with a big smile, and says, “Yeah, okay… this is what we came to Lombok to see.”
Travel Responsibly
Otak Kokok waterfall is still clean because people take care of it. Pack out your rubbish, stick to the main dirt paths so you don’t crush the plants, and respect the villagers living around the forest. Hiring local drivers and guides directly keeps these communities supported and these trails looked after.

Try starting your day early to beat the heat and catch the best morning light.
